Feedback.

Selection of feedback I received from students of my workshops:
🇬🇧 English Feedback

Andre was a great instructor. Kept me engaged throughout each session. Explained complex problems in an understandable format

"

After being very confused about how github works for a long time, Andre's demo cleared up how it works! Also hands on practice with SQL was useful as I know it is important to know

"

It was one of the best online learning sessions I've had. Really really great mix of ways of interacting rather than just a lecture which is what a lot of people do. Kept me engaged throughout.

"

It mimics a classroom but is actually more efficient. The use of miro means, not everyone is shouting one over the other like in real life, but that everyone is writing their points which is nice

"

André was a fantastic teacher who had extreme patience. This coupled with what seemed to be endless knowledge on multiple languages and frameworks made him an excellent teacher.

"

Excellent presenter and nice person

"

Andre Kovac was a fantastic teacher full of enthusiasm who put in a huge amount of effort. He helped me understand some real fundamentals which will help me build my skills so much faster

"

Andre did a great job at explaining complex concepts to us in a fun and engaging way.

"

Andre went above and beyond to explain how everything worked

"

A great instructor, I learned so much! I would highly recommend Andre!

"

Andre is a really good trainer. His explanations were clear and at a good pace. It was a nice overview of how react native code is written and I now have a better understanding of it.

"

I've thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this course (even the most challenging bits) and I really feel like I've grown as a person.

"

Andre is an incredible instructor with very extensive knowledge and attention to detail. His logical and problem-solving skills really shine through during class and when assisting with bugs. Also very engaging and throws in some funny jokes that make the class a bit more relaxed & a good environment :)

"

Of all our instructors, I thought André was one of the best teachers. He uses simple metaphors to illustrate difficult ideas. I was terrified of the dojos we did but also loved them. We're a quiet group, and he got us to interact. He also helps a lot of workshops during the project weeks that I found super helpful for really going over and understanding concepts. I also liked that he had us walk through our code and thinking.

"

Great at making the sessions engaging and injecting a bit of fun, and also working through problems/bugs with us.

🇩🇪 German Feedback

Wüsste nichts, was ich anmeckern könnte.

"

"

My educational approach.

My educational approach is a mix of 🔬 discovery and presentation of theory 📚 : Create many 🤓 "aha" moments

Methods

  • 👟 Learning by doing: Educator as facilitator
  • ⏱ Just in time learning: immediately apply the theory
  • Keep everyone engaged via
    • 🤝 helping the ones who struggle
    • 🚀 bonus-tasks for the fast ones
  • 🛣 Involve people: Drawing on life experience makes them interested
  • 💪 Exercise design: Balance between guidance and self-direction
  • 🏋️‍♀️ Exercises: Mix between group work and single hands-on exercises
  • 🤯 Complex technical topics: My own developed method "Show, Guide, Do, Showcase"

Learning environment

My goal is to create a kind learning environment and not a wicked learning environment. An environment with quick feedback loops in which learners can progress their knowledge by working through small tasks.

To increase motivation and a sense of achievement, each task should only increase the complexity in a small amount. For example, a text in a new chapter of a language learning book should only contain a maximum of 5% new vocabulary. More would not be beneficial.

My experience in education

Education is my biggest passion. I taught kids in the Emirates and the UK cyber security, coding and robotics. As TA and later as lecturer I designed various curricula and taught scientific programming and statistics. I also taught a refugee, taught some old folks in elderly care homes how to use a computer and spent countless hours counseling maths.

Next to my teaching engagements I am an active science communicator. In this role I tell people about AI, Maths, Chinese and other topics at science slams and other events in interactive performances. You also find some videos on the science communciation page of this homepage.
